Why Jobs Are Filled Before They're Posted (and What to Do)
Here's something most job seekers don't realizeâŚ
By the time a job is posted in January, the hiring conversation has usually been going on for weeks.
Right now, teams are setting next year's priorities, working out budgets, and deciding who they'll need.
And when employers can, they'd rather fill a role through someone they already know, or someone a trusted colleague recommends.
The posting comes LAST.
So the people who get hired aren't always the ones who can do the job best.
They're the ones who know the most about how to get hired.
That's your advantage if you start now, while there's no line.
Here are the 3 things you need to do đ
1ď¸âŁ Talk to people, not postings
Finding the right people at the companies you're targeting is how you get early leverage. Get them to see you and trust you, and they'll gladly point you to opportunities before they ever go public.
2ď¸âŁ Clean up your online presence
Employers will Google you before they call you. Make your LinkedIn say exactly what you want them to find.
3ď¸âŁ Know who you are
From my own job search, and from the thousands of job seekers I've helped get hired, this is the one I'd call non-negotiable.
You have to know your background, your experiences, and how they fit what the market is asking for right now. That's what your job search story is built on.
And without it, nothing else works. You can't clean up your online presence correctly. And even if you network your way into the right rooms, it's hard for anyone to advocate for you when they can't see what makes you the strong candidate to back.
That's why we start there with every client and why I hire coaches from the industries our clients are breaking into, so you get the insider view instead of generic advice.
