Employed but Want a New Job? Start Before a Layoff Hits
My phone buzzed on the counter while I was rinsing out my coffee mug the other morning.
I almost didn't look.
Then I read it:
âI wasn't even on a layoff list. They just... didn't renew my contract. No warning, nothing."
My friend and I chatted for a bit and I got to know he's been on a contract for a couple years. He saw layoffs and terminations and felt lucky every day that it wasn't him.
Then last Friday, it was him.
And if you're currently employed here's this is about you too, even if you don't feel like it is yet.
Because, sometimes you can see a layoff coming, but other times they feel like they come out of nowhere.
Just this year, over 170,000 tech jobs have been cut, and many researchers are saying certain areas will continue to shrink.
You don't need to panic about it. But this is something you probably shouldn't ignore.
Because the safest people in a shaky job market aren't necessarily the ones with the safest job title. Itâs the people with experience that are easy to understand, and who adjust to the trends and the future of their industry.
So here's the real question:
If a layoff hit you tomorrow, would five companies already know why they should hire you?
Or would you be starting from zero?
That part is more in your control than it probably feels right now.
My team can help you figure out how to position your experience, identify the right opportunities, and make sure you're not relying on a resume and a whole lot of hope when there's so much at stake.
Reach out and we'll tell you honestly if it's a fit.
The best time to build your search strategy is before you need one.
